' THE ROTOMAHANA. •The Union Company's steamer Rotomahana withdrew from the Wellington-Lvttelton ferry service yesterday, : and sailed for Port Chalmers direct. The vessel; we learn on inquiry fiom the Union' Company, is to undergo extensive overhaul there, and will probably resume her old running until after Easter. The Lyttelton Times" of March 30 says:— "This evening.the Union Company's handsome and famous, if . veteran, steamer, "the Rotomahana, will leave Lyttelton for Wellington in what is, expected to be her last- trip in the servrce' in which for half a score of years she has earned fame and popularity. •. The old greyhouncl ' is to be transferred to the trade -between the Australian continent and Tasmania, and, in order to-be prepared.for her new sphere of usefulness, she is to .leave WeihnKton direct for Port Chalmers, where she will be docked for an overhaul. Her place in the'- 'ferry'" running will be temporarily filled by the Pateena, but it is understood that j her permanent substitute is to be the Mararoa. which .approaches ;near to her in fame and 1 P°Pu)flnty, is. a larger and more, com* i modious. boat. Though the Rotomaliana has j been, in gome. respects, surpassed by vessels of recent years, she is still a good, staunch; , useful boat, and/ though in her twenty-ninth 1 year, she. has well maintained her. reputation for speed, and regularity. She. is not as swift , as the turbine vessels of to-day, but she has shown herself as reliable, and her departure from l 'the service in which she. has done such good work may well be viewed with sentimental regret. The ' ferryservice is not by any means the only running in which ' the Rotomaliana lias ' been engaged. In the days of -her youth, when she was the pride of tiie reel-funnel fleet, she was. employed in the intercolonial trade and other important work: She was launched in 1879, at Dumbarton, from the yards of Messrs. Denny Bros., the builders of many of the fine vessels of the Union, CoiuPW s fleet/' The Eotomahana has tlie proud distinction of bsing.the first steel steamship, of the. ocean-going : typei ever' built. • Captain D. J7 Watson, secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, leaves for the South this evening on a business trip connected with tho Guild.' The Union Company' 6; steamer Hauroto left Westport at 8' o'clock yesterday morning;, for Dunedin. The Arahura arrived at Greymouth at half-past nine yesterday morning, and was expected to sail on the return journey at 10 o clock last, night; ' " • : It,is understood, says an exchange, that the s.s. Mararoa is .to ,return to New -Zealand in-order-to; take-the place of the's.s. Eotomahana in.the Lyttelton-Wellington; " ferry " service. The latter vessel is expected -to proceed to- Aust'ralia to take.the place of.;the,s.s. Coogee in the Melbourne and Laiinceston running.. The Coogee. is to be laid up for'repairs. The s.s. Zealandia will replace the . Mararoa ill the Sydney-HobaH trade. ' ' . There ,is now teady,- and will be launched iron _the boat-building yard of Mr. Adam Donaldson, at the Bluff, in a dav or so, one of three' fishing craft built to the. order of the.Bhiflr^ Fishing Company, says the;" Otapo Daily Tillies.' These craft are designed with special consideration to tho peculiarities'of the fishing trade amongst the islands, and it Is confidently, expccted.-they . will . materiallv facilitate operations. The craft just finished is built, on ; whaleboat - lines—29ft. long. 7ft. beam, and 3ft. 9in. in depth. The. timber used is Huon pine, imported from -Tasmania, , which 1 is. ' said , to;. be ' equally' durable With, and a shads cheaper, than the kauri hitherto made'usel-'of.-'
