ATTACKED BY NATIVES.
EXCITING INCIDENT/AT THE ISLANDS. (»Y TELKGRAPII —HIESS ASSOCIATION.) . Auckland, March 31, Captain Allen, master of , the steamer Maori, trading ; between Samoa a.nd Fiji, states that two days before tho murder. of tho pursor, Mr. Meliings, at Futuna, tho natives of Wallaoo Island made what was apparently'an attempt to capture the Maori. They wcro : kept clear at; the point of tho revolver. It-was stated that tlio Futunh natives were starving as a result of the hurricane in April last, and tho assault on Mellings is supposed to have been the outcomo of their distress. The Governor of New Caledonia, however, states that lie visited Futuna in November, and that the natives had abundant provisions, and' were busy planting. Tho copra trade had been ruined by tho cyclone, but I jihcrG: could bo no famino.
