Bedford said that it was estimated by a liquor organ •in' Vienna that in, 18 months the. amount of 1 alcohol consumed in tho-world was of such valuo that all tho gold coin m tho world would bo required to purchase it. In Now Zealand, in tho past 37 years,}as much money .had boon spent on alcohol as would havo built all tho railways, redocmed tho wholo ,of the public debt, and left a balanco which would havo carried on the function of government for another, year.- Last; year tho money paid to men and boys engaged, in all tho manufacturing industries of tho Dominion was just a few thousands more than was spent in alcohol, tho ,sum of which was equal in valuo to all the buttor, cheese, and frozen moat exported during the year.
