Since tho news was announced that the Earl of Dudley might bo our'next GovernorGeneral (says tho Sydney "Daily Telegraph") much interest has boon shown by women of all classes in Lady Dudley, and now that the rumour has been confirmed, tho feelings of pleasuro arc intensified in that wo are to have such n highly satisfactory successor to Lady Northco'to. Lady Dudloy, by all accounts, is a ; woman with high principles and /ideals, a thorough believer in work, arid an upholder of the theory that no matter how highly placed or affluent a man or woman may be, he or she is for that very reason all tho more bound to lite to good purpose. Born of a'Quaker family, Miss Gurnoy, whose name was once a synonym for wealth, suffered reverses in her youth, ' arid she was filling .a salaried position .when tho youthful Earl .of Dudloy won. arid married her.
Since then Lord Dudley has filled impor- x tarit public posts, and as Viceroy of Ireland was a great success, much of which success was; duo to his wife., Lady Dudley's experience!, in Dublin Castle will no doubt stand her. in good, stead when sho conies to reign in the Federal Government Houso of Australia. The Countess, whose Christian name is Rachel, is tho youngest daughter of Air. Charles Honry Gurney, of Kcswick, holds the Order of a Lady of Grace of St. John-of. Jerusalem. There aro five children: the. oldest, who bears the courtesy title of Viscount Ednam, is William. Humble Eric, born .in 1894. ■ > .
