CONVENIENCE OF COUNTRY IMPORTERS.' - . . .'-[BY TELEQBAPn.—SI'ECIAIi CORRESPONDENT.] Feilding, March 27. • From-the Department of Trade and Customs the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr. S. W. Fitzhorbert) ■ has received the following letter,, in reply to a request that Justioes of tho Peace bo permitted to witness signatures of declarations under the Customs laws:—"ln reply to your letter of •the .;13th; inst., I liavo to inform you that the reason for deleting Justices of tlie Peace fronV tho list of persons authorised to witness declarations under the Customs laws is that it was found that in many instances Justices wero either unawaro of, or disregarded, thoir obligation to the oxtent' of signing blank declarations for importers. , This occurred so frequently that it was found necessary in order to avoid the risk of tho Department being landed in difficulties to mako tho Minister's order of De--1 comber 19, 1907. It is considered that ample provision remains for the convenience of importers in oountry districts, as postmaster# are still available."
