LIEUTENANT SHACKLETON.
AN APPRECIATION. . ProfeS6or David, of' Sydney, who is accompanying Lieutenant Shaeklfctoli's 'Antarctic. Expedition) gives the folloiving, appreciation of-its leader in stn 'hrtifeltj contributed to tho Sydney "Daily Telegraph",!'—"Lastly, there is -Lieutenant Shackletoii, the .'leader of the expedition, whom many.of .the peoplo of NeW South Wales havo already seen and -heard. ' The more oiie sdes of him the (lioro firmly' does oho bebonlo conVilieed that lie is the. very ideal mail to lead this expedition. He .comes of an old Yorkshire family, which settled in Ireland j Some 320 years ago, and subsequently married into Irish families. Ho is of medium height, and of robust physique, with a .Alio, far-reaching voice, which Hover gives forth ail uncertain Sound. His heroism was amply proved on liiß famous journey iii 1902 with Captain' Robert Scott, to tllo fur* tliest point south yet reached, vi?.., 82deg. 17min. Whilo eminently practical and fc sourceful in all kinds Of difficulties, firm of purpose, and- on excellent disciplinarian, he is full of sentiment, as tender as it is manly. He seems to know all the finest, passages in Browning, Tennyson, and George Meredith's poems by. heart, and in between giving orders in air the' stress of ft'storm'at sea . Will break in With some h'pt quotation from his favourite authors. Ho lias a faultless memory. Ho .ffjis for sdmo time editor of : tho Royftl Magazine, and'is the author of several poem's. His genuine 'interest in geographical research is proved not only by his splendid work for Scott's expedition, as-well as for tho present one, but also by the fact that lit; has been for several years Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society of Scot-land.-. The presclit hifeh position which ho holds/in the important firm of Reardmol'o and. Co., of Glasgow,- who in dome respeOts havo outrivalled Krupp, of Germany, in the manufacture of armour platilig for-warships, has given him-, an insight into engineering and scientific methods, as' well as into the conduet of business cm a large scale. There can bo Ho. doubt, in my opinion, that no Folar expedition has ever sot out under a more eapablo leader, and those who will be with him on liis journey Polewards ai'o in every way worthy of- him, .and worthy representatives; of the .British Empire."
