UNIONIST TRIUMPH.

PECKBAIH BY=EIECIION. TARIFFITE WAVE REACHES LONDON. SHOUTS OF "RESIGN." J3Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. London, March 25. Tho'by-election for Peckham (Camberwoll), a suburb of London, rendered necessary by tho death of Mr. Charles' Goddard Clark (Liberal), caused tho greatest cxcitoment for many years. It resulted:— Mr. Gotch (Unionist Tariffite) 4970 Mr. Gautrey (Liberal) ... «76 Unionist majority ... «94 News of thd result of the election was received in tho House of Commons when tho President of the Board of Trado, Mr. LloydGeorgo, was "speaking to a fiscal reform resolution in connection with unemployment, moved by Mr. E. A- Goulding, tlio, tariff reformor and Unionist, who was ' elected by Worcester City in February. Tho announcement, raised roar after roar of cheers from* tho Unionist benches. ; Unionists stood excitedly waving hats and handkerchiefs, and shouting "Resign! Yo\i will bo unemployed directly.". j Tho debate was ultimately adjourned. | FISCAL MOVEMENT. THE INVASION OP THE TOWNS. The last election for Peckham (Camberwell) resulted as under C. Gi blark (Liberal) ' ... 5903 Sir F. G. Banbury. (Unionist) 35G4 Liboral majority.. ... '. ...' 2339 So a Liberal majority of 2339 has been transformed into a Unionist ■'and tariff roform majority .of 494. 11l January last, when Ashhurton division of Devon, for the:'first time :in its history, returned a Unionist (Captain Morrison-Bell) the Liberal newspaper, "Daily Chronicle," described the election as the worst blow that the Government had received, and admitted that it was a' great victory won fairly ami squarely on'tariff reform.,l The "Morning Post" declared that no rural constituency could withstand tariff reform. ' ! But the feature of recent elections is that tariff reform has won in the towns. Worcester, a manufacturing tow.n, returned the Unionist and' tariff reformer- E. A. Goulding, by a majority- of 1292, votes over ; the Liberal candidate; and A he has already, even thus early in the session, figured prominently as a : mover of tariffite motions. And now a Unionist and tariff reformer has not only won a seat' from the Liberals, but has .done so practically in London itself.. Evidently tliij arguments of the tariff reformers do not appeal only to decaying, .agriculture.
