FIRE AT OAMARU. CYCLE WORKS DESTROYED. •'•(BY TELEGRAM—PRESS ASSOCIATION.). ' Oamaru, March 25. A - fire broke out early this' morning, completely ties troying Mr; W. H. lsdale's. Federal Cycle Works in Thames Street. The flames obtained ' a' strong: hold' before tho brigade' arrived, arid' considerable difficulty was experienced■■ in preventing them .from spreading' to tho adjoining premisee of Messrs. 1 Gresham and Watson, auctioneers, and Mr. B. Emslio! tobaoconist. The stock of tho two latter was much damaged by water, and removal.;, The insurance on the buildingj which was owned by Mr.' James Emclie/was £800; on Mr. lsdale's portion it was £370; on Messrs. Gresham. and Watson's £225; and'ou Mr'. B.';Emslie's £175; on aa outhouse £25. Mr. lsdale's stock arid plant were insured'for, £750 in the ; Alliance', "and .Messrs. ' Gresham and: Watson's-, stbek for _£100 in,the State office. There was no insuranco on Mr. B. Emslie'sv stock.-. Mr. Isdale estimates his'loss at nearly'£soo above insurance. ' . AUCKLAND'S DRAINAGE . SCHEME^' •i i- Auckland, March 25. Spoaking at the laying of tho foundation stone of. tho Grafton Bridge this, afternoon, the Mayor (Mr. 'Arthur M. Tho shipping-in port; to-day an interesting feature in that three generations of tho Melariesian mission—the Isabel (late Southern Cross), the barquentine Southern Cross, and the steamer. Southern Cross—are lying at anchor. The two former were sold, as they becamo obsolete for missionary work, and the steamer Southern Cross is', the latest acquisition to tho Molariesian mission. The first and 6nly other :yessel'owned, by the mis-; sion was also named Southern Cross. On being sold, she was renamed Santa Cruz,'and after trading,between the .Islands,'arid Sydney, she was eventually wrecked on' one of tho Pacific outposts. OTEKAIKE.SETTLEMENT, '' ... Tho following are the main 'questions which, would form' the basis, of amalgamation :—(a) At least £10,000 would bo roquired' to equip ' and 'finish tho dock, (b) Responsibility .of the final • settlement of the dock contract, (c) IMuction of interest on debentures to 4J per cent, (d) Transfer of existing guarantees to tho Harbour Board, (o) ■ Necessary legislation.; to carry the amalgamation into elicct.
