Mr. Lyttelton : —who attacked the Government in the House ,of Commons; for assenting- to ,the re-enact-' ment of the Chinese Labour Ordinance—accidentally .'discovered that -assent had been given to 'the .re-enactment while examining the Transvaal's.' official: records., Mr. Asquith, Acting-Premier, replying to Mr. Lyttelton, reprobated language calculated to add to! the Transvaal's difficulties of self-government.-; His "pledge had been fulfilled jin .the. letter , and in the spirit., In a speech made, in 1906 he undertook to defeat any attempt to establish the permanence of Chinese labour. ' \ Mr. Balfour, Leader of .the Opposition, in a trenchant reply, while emphasising the violation of pledges, accepted tho declaration that the speech meant something it did not contain. He. invited Mr. Asquith .to produce correspondence with tho Transvaal relating to the assent to the re-enactment of the ordinance. ." Ultimately, the Consolidated Revenue Bill —the debato on which had been made tho occasion for tho discussion—was read a second time. ' ~ ':
