A TALK WITH WAIRARAPA MER-. CHANTS. From a-conversation which our -Wairarapa torrosporideiit has had ' .'with", the ■ 'principal Mastertori : merchants, it ■appears that there is naturally a record ' demand 1 for rye grass. There has also be<m a run upon cocksfoot and clover seeds,' but the almftst'prohibitive prieo asked for cocksfoot has Considerably lossencd the demand.
Mr. .Wyiiii-Williams, of the firm' 'of Keeling and WynnVWilliams; stated that there was a report that the Akaroa seed-growers were holding stocks for a further rise,' but so far the report lackcd cbrtflrmntirtri. In the present circumstances. Mr. - Wyim-Williams thought that " there would certainly; .bo ~ a great -.shortage, of cocksfoot. for! 'tho spring sowing; 'Owing to -their worth for. winter feed, .Algerian oats are' in good demand, with rising prices, and low stocks,, / . The manager of the W.F.C.A. stated that' the demand for corn rye was greater than it had ever been before, and: the firm had 'difficulty in ; supplying orders'. There was also good demand for Cape barley; Messrs. Dalgety and Company corroborated the statement that there'•was much inquiry for, com rye, in addition to rye grass, cocks-, .foot, and crc6ted dogt-ail.vThe firm had had very little inquiry; for-Cape barley,.- Italian ryo would probably be asked for later for the , spring sowing.; . White • clover * found a placo on nearly, all: orders.- , Messrs. Levin and Company 'and J. D. Cruiekshanl; and Company said that'at present ryo "grass," docksfoot,' and- Algerian oats wore .uppermost in the farmers' minds, and there was a fair demand for Italian rye.
