■■ Tlio Borough Council on Tuosday evening set up a committeo to mako arrangements for entertaining the Premier when ho visits Palmerston to open tho waterworks. Councillor Haydon has decided to contest tho Mayoral election. A well-attonded open-air concert was given last evening by the Palmerston Band in aid of tho funds for tho Boys' Brigade. Dairy factory managers report a considerable falling off in tho milk supply. Somo creameries are now running ,011 alternate days.' v -

HUNTEItVILLE SPOUTS. Tho Huntorvillo Sports were held yesterday in dull weather. A satisfactory sum was receivwl at the gates, and. with a record membership, tho club should havo a good credit balance. Tho results wore as follow:— Maiden Race— Illsioii, 1; Dalziell, 2. Bicyclo Race (three miles).—A. 0. Parkes, 1; A. E. Parkes, 2; W. Parkes, 3. Tho placed riders aro brothers, and tho wiirner mado a well-sustained run.

4 representative meeting of the Otaki and Tainui_ Football Clubs was held hero on Tuesday night consider tho proposal of amalgamation, which, after light discussion, was unanimously agreed upon, and the new club is to be known as Kia Toas, a name that was in voguo in Otaki when football was at its best. Officers were elected, and various. committees set up. The Horowhenua Horticultural and Industrial Society's annual autumn show, was held yesterday, under rather unfavourable circumstances. Firstly, the drought interfered to a great extent'with'flowers, fruits, and vegetables, consequently causing -a big drop in entries; and, secondly, rain threatened early m the morning, and commenced to fall at .9 o'clock. Notwithstanding theso serious draw-backs,-the display was a very fair one, the cookery and vegetable classes being well represented, .while pot plants were good. The display of cut blooms was bolow the ordinary, and the decorative 'cla-* '"•"V none too well represented. Messrs. Weighman and Sons had a fine display, likewise jiessrs. T. Horton and Sons.

Tho weather, since the thunderstorm of last Monday, is cold and windy, with frequent showers of rain.' Tho Manawatu River is higher than it has been since the spring, and steamers havo no_ difficulty in navigating it. _ Tho advance in the price of hemp had given a fillip to the industry, and there is talk of some of the mills restarting.

There is no improvement in the weather here, rain having been falling sinco Thursday last. . The demand for'grass seed here has not been anything out of tho ordinary, although tho demand for cocksfoot has been earlier than usual. . ,
