Fire Brigade: in- its present-'form for the time being, until a conference with tho Brigade's Executive was held. A secreary, . - vafuer, superintendent, and deputy were appointed. The Borough Council is to be asked' to advance £50 contingent expenses., Tho quostion of forming firo police and salvage corps is to bo discussed later. LOCAL INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION. . Exclusive of mines and! quarries,, there are said to he no less than ..' -88-5 different' manufacturing industries in th« ; - Auckland province. NOXIOUS WEED PROSECUTION.
Cisborne, March 24. In tho Magistrate's Court, the Inspector of . Noxious Weeds proceeded against a farmer for failing to cut blackberries. For the defence it was contended that the cultivated plant, the Lawtoiv berry, could not bo brought , under' the designation ' ""rabus fruiticosis" in tho Act. The prosecution, nowever, asserted thqt any blackberries not properly cut and trimmed, though they were improved varieties, became noxious weeds. The' Magistrate reserved his decision. ' GISBORNE HARBOUR SCHEMES. Clsborne, March 24. The Harbour Board discussed reports presented by Mr. Marchant, C.E., of Timaru, and Messrs. Coode,'Son and Matthews, England, on the proposed new harbour. Both reports were in agreement on'the'main features of the work v but differed somewhatvin details. The cost will bo about £400,000. Members agreed that' the Board was in a sound position to go on with th.o works, and it was decided to refer the 'schemo to tho superintendents of the shipping companies ; for their opinions. : . The question of pay appears to bo the chief cause of. complaint.. • ■ William James 'Killen was accidentally killed in'a sluicing claim at Dee Creek, Three Channel Flat. lie was 37 years of age, and the only son of Mr. and Mrs.-Richard Killen,: of Addison's. -Deceased was employed in the tail race, when a fall of stones occurred, pinning .Killen and instantly killing him. A number of 'employers cited to appear, in tho Arbitration Court here to-day. were considerable "inconvenienced arid annoyed to find that there was 110 sitting of tile Court.
