COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS' SCHOOLS,
What, tho commercial travellers have done for themselves at Homo is shown by tho following report, appearing in' Homo, papers December 21:—The anrtivorpry'fostival. din'li'er in . aid of .'the Commercial Travellers' Schools,'- Pimifer; was ,held at the' Whitehall lidoms. E.Keyser'presided and .proposed the toast of " Prosperity to the Schools:!' He,'. said Hhe. institution was founded in 1845 by Mr;, J. ,-R. Cuftley, a cofiimdfcial traveller. Commercial travellers' led ti ■v6i , y v ßtrontloua; lifd, and Were very liable to illness, and often to early death, and Mr, Cttffloy fblt that £oino spqeial institution, ought to bo'provided for the children of thosp who succumbed to ,or who becamo' in-, capacitated. Their founder's efforts had been well- supported, not ■ only by, the; travellers themselves, but;.by thoso who employed them, and they had ' now. a magnificent establishment, of which they had cause to be proud. At first .a. Gchool was established at Wanstead, but it was very soon found insufficient,, and in.; 1855 the buildings on the-present site were formally , opened by -the Prin'co Consort. In 1876 an.infirmary.-and sanatorium 4 ,ver6f built; and ,in IBS'!. a -;new wing:., was opened, and ■ the accommodation was nearly doubled: on that occasion. , The liberality . of their '' supporters , still continued,, and last year they, received a . gift, of 2000 guineas, which was'.to bo utilised., rery- greatly to the benefit of ; the establishment. They had how ,a finely-equipped; school educating. 300 drcn. ! It was most' econortiically and admirably managed, but'£ll,ooo was required annually to' keep. tho.. institution going,' for which they .depended upon the geuorosity qf tho; publib; and the...energetic co-operation of commercial-' travellers, themselves. That' institution and its" sister 'charity, tlio Commercial Travellers'' Benevolent, Association,' were maintained solely for one class of the community, and thqro'was a ring of freemasonry about their ' work, which- appealed to him; Mr. I).
