THE NAPIER CARNIVAL.

It is peculiarly unfortunate that Napier, which is deservedly accounted one of the sunniest spots in tlie Dominion, should- have suffered such miserable weather during tlie Garni-, jval. Sucli : an unfortunate first experience will probably; damp tie . ardour of Napier people,, and militate agaifist/any future attempts, to organise another carnival similar to that upon which, the rain has been falling so iinsympathetically. For the horseracing fine weather was experienced, but thereafter the weather was unfavourable. The swimming contests wdre not- greatly afiectcd, and the Unpleasant conditions prevailing did not entirely spoil the rowing contests. In ordinary circumstances the Carnival would have been an undoubted success in every way, but it seems probable that the rain has turned the favourable possibilities into an unprofitable and disappointing reality. Although the conditions, of life in Wel-i lirigton are such "as to make almost impossible the entertainment of any suggestion that'a carnival''oil-the lines of the , Napier arrangement ; could be ■ held in this city, Wellington people can understand arid approve/the Carnival activities of towns in which life is involved in 'gentler circumstances 1 . The Napier people are to be congratulated ,upon'their enterprise, and upon their valiant contest with their enemy the rain, and the Organisers of the Carnival, will not lack t-lie sympa-; thy of the general public in their un-' merited .ill-fortune -,in respect of the weather; an ill-fortune the more exasperating for the general confidence which they place in their pleasant, skies.
