SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS.
CHAMPION'S SPLENDID RECORD. WINS FIVE OUT tOF SIX. FREYBERG'S PLU.CKY PERFORMANCE. [BY TELEGRAFn.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] c . . . Napier, March 23. swimmers and rowing men gathered at the west shore to-day, when tho whole of tho championships wero decided. The weather waa not as good as could have been desired, heavy rain falling at intervals. By 11 o clock tho wind had died away, leavinc the water beautifully smooth. The arrangements were bad again, but an improvement on Saturday. _ Champion, of Auckland, put up great perrormances, in swimming, winning the 220 yards, 440 yards, and milo championships, which, with two won oil Saturday, make five out of six championships. Champion J" us won everything ho started in, a portormance which has only, been > equalled twice betore, once by Champion! and onco by ;J. Hamilton. The Aucklander. proved hims'elf yards bettor than the others at every distance, and won very easily. Freyberg, of Wellington, finished second, to Champion at every distance, and also swam splendidly. Ilie times-were remarkably fast, but this is accounted for by tho fact. that tho course is short, owing to the pontoons shifting and the current helping the swimmers. It is stated that none, of tho times will be recognised a_s records, as tho races were not swum in dead water. .
FREYBERC AND CHAMPION
In the 220 yards race tho Wellington man set out with the intention of cracking Champion up, but failed in tho attempt. From a Freyberg took the' lead, and at the 2o yards mark had loft a yard between him ands Champion. Tho Wellington boy increased his lead to two yards in the next 70, but the Aucklander then improved his position, and had drawn up on level terms at 100, yards. Ho then • forged ahead, and got away from Freyberg in the last part of tho journey, winning eventually by four yards. Dodyo swam into third placo. The official time, 2min. 30sec., was received with doubt, tho world's best being only- 2min 28 3 : ssec., put up. by Kicran. Freyberg's time was 2min. 35scc.
Champion had another easy win in the 440 yards raco. When 50 . yards had been covered ho and Freyberg were leading Champion then began to pull away, and had gained a little at 100 yards. With 150 yards gono tho Aucklander had throe yards to tho good, Freyberg still hanging on to him, with others close u[i. When 220 yards had been covered Champion had an advantage of seven yards. There, was a good deal of jostling amongst the back markers at the
-20 yards turn, but the two leaders got away clear. Kernott fouled Bridges, and turned for tho return journey without touching the pontoon, thus gaining a couple of yards. At 300 yards Champion was atill' trudging away in a solid, business-like manner, and had a lead of five yards, Freyberg having spurted from 220 yards and reduced the gap. The Aucklander was too strong a swimmer, however, and at 400 yards had drawn away aagin, Freyberg having swum wido. In the meantime the back markers were plugging along, with the 1 exception of Trlii' 5 retired, and Dodge had displaced MCarthy, and got into third place. The leaders at 400 yards were Champion, Freyberg, Dodge, M'Carthy, and Bridge. Champion was 20 yards in front of Freyberg, with Dodge eight yards away next. This was the order of finishing. M'Carthy and Bridge had a groat contest for fourth place, tho fornier getting homo by a touch. Tho time, smm. 58sec., is immeasurably superior to the i ~ „ ealand recorcl of Gmin. 26scc., held by Bull ; of Christ-church. Champion's best was 6nun. 19sec., in the Auckland provincial championship.-
another easy win. Tho mile was another easv win for Champion. Rich, of Christchurch', had held off all day m order to bo fresh to meet the Auckandcr in this race, but was no match, and be only succeeded in getting third place. I'reyberg had a doubt about starting, but entered the water and swam a plucky race, getting another second to Champion. Tho Aucklander took tho load from the start-, and was never headed. Ho plugged away steadily length after length, and gradually increased his load. Fearnon was hopelessly out of the raco from tho start, and retired at 440 yards. I'reyberg and Rich were close together practically the whole way. Freyberg l".d most of the journey, llich only heading himoncc. ; At the half-milo Champion was 50 yards to the good. Freyberg was leading Rich by liino yards. When Champion reached the finishing post he -was sent on over an extra 35 yards, as the course had been found to be short. Ho eventually finished 85 yards ahead of Freyberg. The Wellingtonian put m a great finish, and came second, 40 yards ahead of Rich. FREYBERC EXHAUSTED. Freyberg put in a brilliant dash in tho last- 20 yards, and took the last ounce out of himself. Liko Champion,, lie was sent' to complete the extra 35 yards; which ho did, but tho effort ■ was too much for tho boy after his brilliant finish, and three hard races in one day. He completed the courso in an exhausted condition, having' swallowed a good deal of water, and went under twico before ho was picked up by a boat. Freyberg was carricd ashore in an unconscious condition, and taken into the rowing shed, where ho,revived after a little attention.; The public wore enthusiastic at tho plucliy spirit, shown b.v tho Wellington boy. Froybcrg ■was all right half an hour after - tho raco, and stated that ho reserved himself for the sprint home, and was quite done up when ho was ordered to do another 35 yards. Freyborg is satisfied that in every raco, except the 100 yards, ho did ; his best, but he recognises a better man in Champion. In the 100 yards, however, ho considored he should liavo beaten the Aucklander. • ' :
THE STANDARD BEATEN. The three* competitors in tho mile swimming championship all beat the standard of 29mm. Champion cut out tlio distanco in 14 l-ssec.,; Froyberg, 28inin.' Bscc.; and Rich, 28min. 26scc. On measuring tho course it was found to bo four yards eight inchcs short, but tho extra distanco swum by each of tho men makes tho full distance. An effort will bo' mado' to get tho standard but it is anticipated there will bo difficulty in getting tho times rccogniscd. Tiio courso for the 220 yards and 440' yards championships was short. This in 'somo measure accounts for tho times given out.
THE REGATTA. EVENTS DESCRIBED. . Napier, March 23. The championship regatta was got off without a hitch in spite of the rain. Tho champion sculls- resulted in an easy win for tho Akaroa champion, Wholch. After somo delay at tho post a good start was effected. Whelch took the lead at'the mile, and,- rowing a fino steady stroke, \distanced the/others, and won by about twenty longfcljs from M'Donald. Green was a poor foiir|jJ|; 'Stokes and then Fell gave up: The /laUor,'; hopelessly out of it, retired half a milo from home. The champion fours' was a fairly easy thing for Blenheim No. 2 crew, who won tho fours at tho recent Wellington regatta. After tho first mile Blenheim got in front, and wero never headed, winning by 3J Jongths after a fino race.'' Waitemata and' Clifton had a great contest for second place, tho former just gaining, tho vordict. . ' Akaroa had hard luck in tho champion pairs. They finished 'in great style, but went on the wrong' side of tho jetty and .were robbed of their chance. Pictpn gained first plac'o by fifteen longths, Union (Wanganui) beating ■ Stars by a length for second honours. Tli'o finish of tlio champion double sculls was the subject of complaint. Tho finish was:—Akaroa, 1; Wanganui, 2; Wellington, 3. Wanganui entered a protest against.tlio winners for not finishing, on tlio line, but instead of the protest being uphold, tlioy were told they were disqualified for taking Wellington's water." Consequently, Akaroa was placed first and Wellington second. Wellington finished seven lengths behind Akaroa, and a length behind, Wanganui^
The ■ Wellington clubs performed- fairly well outside, of champion events. Robertson (Stars) led for half tho distance in the nu iden sculls,-but then gave way to Christiansen (Wanganui Union), who woii by a length and a half, after a good brush home. Ho is a game sculler, and also ran into third placo in the junior sculls. • '
The Wellington Club carried off the maiden double sculls, '.which was 'rowed in a blind-
ing rain storm. Wellington took the lead when half tho journey was traversed, and novor.left tho issuo in doubt, winning from tho Union, of Napier, by four lengths. Tho Star quartetto pulled off,tho youths' after a great set-to with Union (Wanganui). Only half a length separated the two boats at the finish. Stars and Wellington wero second and third respectively in tho junior double sculls, which wero won by Aranioho by a length. The Wellington crew was»a long way out at tho finish.
