The award of the Compensation Court in connection with tho. compulsory, acquisition of . tho Culvcrden estate by the' Government -for tho purposes of closer, settlement was given this afternoon.. Tho members; of tho Court were Mr. Justico Donniston (President)" and Messrs. J. Ronnio :aiid D. D. Macfarlano (assessors), . rcpresoirting tho Government and owners respectively. Mr. Stringer,, with him Mr. RuSsell, appeared for tho claimants, .and Mr. D. M. Findlay, 'with him Mr. Cassidy, for tho Crown. Tho owners . claimed £100.637 as compensation for tho acquisition of tho estate. .
Tho President stated, that tho, award had been arrived at by .a; majority' of , tho .Court, and tho award was to includo all tho suW jeets of tho claim in a lump, sum.; It was understood that of tho two amounts included in tho 'memorandum from 'both parties, £382 ss. and £168 15s. for. adjusting mortgages, Wero accepted by, tho mortgagee as settling any claim against, -the Crown, and tho Crown was freed from any liability on that account. ,-Tho award also included costs. • The award , also contained a declaration as to tho land tax contained in tho second paragraph of tho memorandum. • Tho Court awarded to tho claimants tho sum of £119,450, and fixed tho assessors' fees at £10 10s. for the four .days. Tho award would bo drawn up by tho Crown.
INTENTIONS OF THE GOVERNMENT, Yesterday tho Hon. R. M'Nab (Minister for-Lands and Agriculture) received the following telegram from Mr. D. ,M. Findlay; solicitor, who lias been watching, tho - in ;i terests of tho Crown in tho'assessment-'ol tho price to bo paid for tho Culverden'estato undor tho Lands for Settlement Act:— " Tho President " and tho claimants' assessors have agreed upon £119;450. This includes mortgagees' claims of £700 odd and all costs. Tho award for tho .land is on a basis of o.per cent, on tho land tax value of £113,000." The Minister stated to a Dominion io, porter that tho estate will now bo cut up and prepared for settlement without delay. It will be sub-divided .into, twerity-cight farms. Tho 'Minister is of opinion that the settlomcnt will prove a very prosperous ono, and that great impetus will .bo'given to the/ district. All tho twenty-eight farms will bo within easy reach of tho railway station, which is a great and uniquq advantage. Culvorden is at tho head of tho North Canterbury railway.
