Everything points t6'a hard winter (writeo our Wairarapa correspondent). There will bo a shortage in; feed, stock will bo scarce, and prices will go up in beef, mutton, and other commodities. There will, in consequence, bo a run on preserved 1 meats,, jams, and margarine. With the flaxmills closing down and farmers cutting down employment as a protest against the labour conditions, thero will bo a largo number of unemployed on tho market.': Even now there is a general business complaint; in nearly all the country towns about trade slackness, and tho tightness of the money market. Butchers and , bakors make no sccret of demanding cash -payment', and in the next few. months the •- trouble'.is likely to become intensified. .Land . is said to ; bo too high -in price, and- must ; como down,' and this spells more trouble.';
