A VISIT TO AUCKLAND.

. Sir,—l read with .feelings of, disgust, your; report of an interview between 0110 of your representatives", and Mr. Herbert Seatoiv ontho above subject;' ' I should -,liko 'to- 'state' right hero that I hold no brief for Auckland; nor for any other city; in'fact, I have'ivisiteu.' Auckland only on three occasions, my last ~visit,• 'being quite 'recent.. _ i ■ .< In comparing Auckland with Wellington,Mr. Seaton expresses the opinion that '.'tlicro is only one ,city in, Now Zealand,, and it isnot Auckland'.". It' may bo. that bo has not yet visited ' Christchureb . and' Dunedin,- although, no doubt, that would, be useless, as Mr. Seaton is evidently thattype of. man who, if lie travelled tho world, would still say that there is; no placo liko Wellington';- and there are thousands of others like him here.

. Mr. Seaton refers to the bright clean appearanco of the Wellington tramcars. Well, I'vo lived hero for. some considerable, time now, and I'm still looking for anything bright or clean .about the tramcars, -while as for noiso, nothing in the shape of tramcars could ie more noisy than' thoso 'of Wellington. Iliisj; however, is; probably accounted for by the miserably' narrow streets in: this city. With regard to a drain which Mr..Seaton refers, to as emptying itself into the Auckland Harbour, that is surely preferable to allowing the sewerago to drain on to a public road. l''or an example of this, let Mr. Season take a trip lip, Karori Road ona hot day, and inspect tho dirty ditch opposite- tho Botanical Garde'ns. It needs no wind from that quarter to-"whiff the smell up one's nostrils." On summing up Mr. Seaton's remarks, it would appear that ho has taken a trip to Auckland for tho special purpose of discovering all tho bail, points that exist in that city, and has added a'few imaginary : ones. In conclusion, I. would ask Mr. Seaton if ho noticed that Auckland is not' oi.crrun with Chinamen, like this "King ;'Oiry'!'of Wellington. —I am, etc.,' UNBIASED. March 19, 1908.
