THE LANGDALE SETTLEMENT.

. A PROSPEROUS COMMUNITY. One of tho most successful settlements acquired from the owners by.the Government (writes our travelling correspondent) is the Langdalp Settlement, formerly tho-property of, Messrs.' Elder, in the Tonui district. ■ This property was purchased at what to-day would be considered a ridiculous price. It was cut up into fairly large areas, with a few ex-ceptions,-and leased on l.i.p. at very reasonable rentals. To-day thoso men who were fortunate in obtaining sections niro in a very good case indeed, Tliev have had the last few fat years in which to develop their forms, and in tho majority of cases are now in a very comfortable position. f was in the wool-shed on Langdale the other day. It is an enormous building, all heart of totara, and the timber of a size that is not used nowadays, tho floor joists and plates being more lijce heavy bridgo tijnber. Thei'Q is a screw-press in the shed which cost originally in Melbourne, £70. Mr. Ryder, wl?o has the homestead block, told me'tho screw alone cost' £30. 1

The settlement is bounded by the Wharcamii river; and on the opposito sido is lea station, the property of the Into Rev. J. C. Andrew. This is an estate which somo peoplo aro anxious to lmvo'taken over by tho; Government, but I believo that, under tho'will of the late owner,'it is divided into five'portions,-and these are .to be worked as entirely soparate properties, each having its homoitead, wool-shed, eto.
