J The German -'Federal Coun6il has sanctioned the scheme of Herr Dernburg (Director of German Colonial Affairs) to construct 900 miles of railway, at a cost of seven and a half -millions sterling, in the African colonies. • ' COLONIAL. DEVELOPMENT. At an interview' which Herr Dernburg granted to a, representative of, the "Berliner Tageblatt," at Naples, the Colonial Secretary expressed his confidence in' the future of German East The colony,: ho stated, was ;within, measurable distance' of beings able to support itself, and, with care "and perseverance, the exploitation of its rich natural resources would lead in duo timo to great re'sults. The journey 'would be productive of important administrative measures and reforms, but as to' tho precise nature of these proposals, and concerning the railway and immigration questions, Herr Dernburg had no communication .to t make. Herr Dernburg cordially recognised the valuable information and guidanco which he had received front tho British,'whoso colonies in East : Africa he considered . were mucli in the same stage of development as the German—a somewhat inadequate of their progress. The manager ..of the, East, African Railway, Horr IClincke, who was also one. of Herr Dernburg's party,' said that the two things of which the colony stood most .in need .were .railways and ,irrigation.
