RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS
THE CONDITIONS. ■■ ; /_. . •-. .SCHEME BRIEFLY OUTLINED. It was stated in tlieso columns yesterday that Cabinet had decided to institute research scholarships for the Dominion. Something in this nature was proposed in connection with a Soddon Memorial when the matter was before tho country in the latter part of 1906. ' . • There, aro to bo four scholarships—one for each of the University Colleges. Each scholarship will bo of tho annual value of £100, in addition to college laboratory fees and tho cost of .spccial books and special purchases. The tenurd of each scholarsh'p will bo two years, with a possible extension t-o a third year, on tho recommendation of the Special Board. Tfiis Special,. Board (which will select tho candidate and suporyiso his work) 1 will consist of the Professors, of Science of tho University Collego to which tho/..tcandidate belongs, a representative' of the Department, of- Education, and a person skilled in tho spccial branch or industry accepted for the research.
The v subjeots of tho research arc to be selected ..by tho candidate, .when applying for a scholarship, from'a specified list of suitable subjects, in which-the research would be likely to be of economic valiie to tho Dominion. The successful candidates', choice of-subject must- bo approved by tiro Board and tho Minister. Progress reports as to tho research are. to bo mado by the candidate, and by tho professor of. tho branch of scjenco to which the subject relates, and are to bo forwarded to tho Special Board, and by, it to the Minister for, Education. * The whole time of tho student. during tho term of. .tho scholarship is to be given to' the rosearch undertaken.
No one is to be eligible for tho scholarship unless tho holder of a B.Sc. degree, or .the holder' of a B.A. degree, and who hasvpassed the degree examination in science. i .. • The results of the research are to be tho property of tho State.
In connection with the scholarships . it rpay not be expected that great results will immediately follow; Tlio benefits of the research .will, probably como indirectly. A list of the industries will bo drawn up shortly," and submitted. Professors of Scienco are to go fully into tho matter, and, nd~3oubt will accept suggestions from any person export in a particular branch. It is not unlikely that , some .person on investigatory work at present/may approach tho' Board and olai;n tho assistance of The scholarship.- > .
