HIBERNIAN SPORTS.

0- —■ —■' ■ A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ■The.'annual, sports gathering under tbo auspices of the Hibernian Society was held on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Despite the chilly southerly and tho pro3pect3 of rain the attendance totalled over 1000. . The programme comprised no- fewer. than twenty-sjx events, and the punctual manner in which they wero got off reflected great credit on'tho officials. On the whole, the fields wore largo,' and in somo events keen contests resulted. The proceedings were enlivened by selections rendered by Jupp's Band. , - , A featuro of tho : (gathering was tho fino performances of T. Rigg; the 'winner of tho one-milo and three-milo running' handicaps.Rigg will bo remembered as .the Victoria Collegs long-distnnco champion last year. ; His free stylo was much admired..'. Marshall, tho winner of the ono and a half milo walk gavo a fine exhibition. At .tho Hutt Valley sports, recently, he came second •to tho ohampion Kerr. Improvement in style marked tho display given by Fitzgerald, who camo second. Ho is, however,. still inclined to lift. Casliman, who filled third place, neglects to'lock his knees at times—a fault which he should hare little difficulty in mastering.!- ■ - . Thero wero largo fields for the shortrdistanco events,. including a number of young runners, who showed promising form. Seventeen competitors in the 75 yards handicap provided three well-contested heats. A' splondid start was effected in the filial, which resulted in a victory for Dunn by less than a yard. All the four heats in'tbo 100 yards handicap were run in fast times.. Hubbard, tho winner of the final, afterwards gained the first award in the long jump with a leap of 19ft. The result in the.22o'yards flat,' won by Toutenborg, might havebeendifferont had not a competitor accidentally ;got in tho way of Pollock: Several spills'occurred in tho -220 _ yards hurdles, in the filial • of. which tho judges were unable to separato M'Grath and Boyle for first place. : The winner of the quarter,' • Ferguson,- is •. a ..much? improved runner. :V ..■• -

■ The events for boys attracted large fields. Both the Marist School handicaps were won by F. Sullivan. , The half-mile walk, handicap fpr:youths ilnder oightcien attracted a .fairly numerous field. Asv might be. expected,. ; the contest' furnished : quitii. a study. in- : styles.. The hero of: tho race' was J. Hicklin (a twelve-year-old), who .was only defeated by. a. very narrow margin by a lad named Kutnur (seventeen years of. age).,;. Hickliri's display, was one of the finest ever seen in similar contests in Wellington. o:' Several teams participated in the tug-of-war, which- ultimately resulted. in trials of - strength between- Pririgle's Hutt team and the Hibernians.' The former team, which had evidently practised assiduously, proved to bo tho victors. , • Following aro the detailed results:— MAIIiST,BROTHERS' SCHOOL HANDICAP •- of 100 Yards. • First heat: W.
