The first round was between Nelson and the Swifts' team (Wellington), the teams being as follow:—Nelson:> Horton, .Champion, Watson, Emerson, Allan, Pettit, and Graham. Swifts: P. Moore, B. C. Freyberg, Lynch, Jcnkinson, F, Wilton, Wilmott, and C, Moore. From the throw-in Nelson attacked and displayed good combination, but Lynch relieved clovorly, and passed to' Freyberg, who mado a goo<l shot nt goal, which was nicely Btopped by Horton. Nelson carao to tho attack again, but were repulsed, and play was removed into Nelson quarters by Freyberg and Jcnkinson, tho result being a pretty goal by the latter. Swifts returned to the attack, and Lynch made a good shot which was kept out- by. tho Nelson goalkeeper. A freo kick to Swifts gavo Wilmott a. good chance, the .result being a 'goal, the ball touching tho goal keeper's hand and going'through. • Swifts kept at it, and wero having all tho best of the play, but no further was recorded beforo. half time.
