In tho House of Lords, tho Duke of Montroso moved the rejection of tho Scottish Small Landholders' Bill (Govornmont moasure) and the substitution of a, -resolution against croftorising.tho }vholo of Scotland. ■. ■ This motion was carried by 153 votes to 33. .Tho Lord .Chancollor (Lord Loreburn) promised that if .tho Houso «:ould'go into committeo on the' Scottish Small Landholders' Bill, tho Government would'meet all amendments in a most, conciliatory spirit. Lord Rosebery,\who supported Lord Montrose's amendment, wroto to "The Times": —"Deeds arq inoro significant than words. After considering tho House,'of Lords' objections for Vsoven months, tho Government returned tho Bill unaltered, although all Scots agricultural authorities 'upheld 1 the action of the Lords."
