ESSAY COMPETITION.
Tho Department of Education has issued tho' following circular for distribution ■ to • school children:—' '' The British afid Foreign Sailors' , Society of .London, ."itablislied for: promoting'the' welfare of sailors at Home and abroad, offers to give .annually, ;for some years, to a-, boy; and girl under sixteen years of being members of schools 'in tho Dominion, an artistic i > suitably'inscribed and the King's initials, for the'best essay upon .a subject, relating to' maritime' affairs. The Society some years '• ago received from tho Lords, of iho Admiralty ;a - gift of all' the' oak and copper removed from H.M.S. ;Vic- . Tory, l''in".the.' process, ofrepairing . damages .. ' caused by l:er collision with the old battle-, , ship "Neptune." Tho Society, also secured about the same time all the copper remaining from Nelson's old jiagsllip . Foudroyant, ! ■ which had. then been broken ..up, and from ■th'6-material obtained from, these two sources the plaquosVnd sorae'pthcr Nelson mementoes . ■ issued by Jihe .Society , aro manufactured. Upon this 'occasion tho subject of ; tlieessay is, "What" does 1 the nation owo. to Nelson ' and her sailors ?" :and the Minister for Education,'. to -whom'-tho offer has been mado,' has prescribed tho following conditions for -the: competition:—l. Competitors must be under sixteein .years of ago on May 31 next.. 2. The essays, which .must not exceed one thousand words, ■ must be' forwarded to tho , v , , Education; Board of the district on -<5r before ;May:3l next. The envelope is to bear-the - ■ . words "Nelson/ Essay." , 8; Tho essays -must be ..written in school' without - notes, text-books, or assistance from the. teacher. 4. Tho t riumber- of essays from tho boys of any one school, or from ■ tho girls of tho same school, ;is limited to two, or' at the most three. ' 5. On the-last'page of-each essay must bo shown tho full name of the writer,: his or her age, tho name of - tho school, and a certification by the head tea- ' cber that the conditions herein imposed have been; fully , complied with. ; As the essays ■ havo to be sent to London, ,it is not ex- ; pected that the results will be known before October. •
