THE PRICE OF MEAT.
.. fr(111 TEtEGII.Vrn—SrECIAT. CnKRESroKDENT.) ' Auckland, March 12. ' Inquiries from local butchers to-day elicited the information that there is likely to bo another rise in the retail price of meat in the near future, notwithstanding the fact that thoro was ft doorcase, in the price of stock at last week's market. It is 'stated that, owing to tho dry Season,, very little .fat stock has been forwarded,''or is likely to bo forwarded for some time. Tuesday's market was, it appears, particularly bare of primo cattle, and wholcsalo prices will probably raugo higher in tho near future.,

Bushranger, the first day's winner was mado a hot favourito. Ho was iii front till tho last hurdle, jumping, beautifully, but the pace - >vas too hot for him, and in the run homo ho was out of a place. Commander was about twenty lengths in tho roar as thoy passed tho stand the first'-time, but he-gradu-ally'-mado'tho'ground up, and in a" strong finish was' just beaten - by the narrowest margin. Royal Blue ran fairly well,'and but for a faulty'jump at the last hurdle would havo been closo up. Reservoir did'not jump too well, but ho raced up to Bushranger between each luirdlo. Tho latter's rider'lost his iron during 'the race, and this may liavo accounted for his mount stopping so quickly' in tho last furlong. Lady; Adair, who is credited with good track work, did not appear to take kindly •to ' tho -jumps, and fiuishod last. ... -.-■■* ■ ■ Tho March Handicap was an evon betting race, Maid of Astolat boing a slightly bettor favourito than Chicane and Gauze. Toa Tulii got chopped out at half tho distance, but ho camo again in tho straight, ' and finished third. Cyrcne led for fivo furlongs.- Gauzo appeared to bo hopelessly out of it at threo furlongs, but she beat.-'everything oxcopt tho winner.
