' ; FIRE BRIGADE ACCIDENT. ASSURANCE.: i The sixteenth annual meeting of the United 'Firo VBrigades Accident Assurance ' Society was Held this morning! The President,, ill - .. Boyes, ' occupied .the char, and nearly ;60 delegates were . " Tho President-, in opening the Conferenco, said: "We have hada most successful'year.: Our incroise' iff -funds'is £153 19s. ;sd.',' bringing up the credit balance'of the Society to £1320 17s;-'6di '• Durin'g the past -year claims wore submitted to ,the. executive, several of 'which' might have, been dealt with '.in' the usual course had, it-hot been for tho lnxity of-tho secretaries'of: tho respective'branches. These''cases had received' the executive's most careful attention, with results that, were satisfactory to those concerned. I would like to : seo this Conference take up the 'matter of establishing an Honours Board, for the, small cost of'tho samo could well be afforded from its management.fund.. Owing to tho rapid growth of the Society, with 'tho'i consequent increase of capital .to its credit,,it behoves' delegates to: exercise care in the selection of-, their. executive. The "question of- the''reduction of .fees or the increase .'of benefits is one that , must be dealt-with,, and which' can easily be . made »• success or a failure by injudicious management-." •Y : ; The following motions wero carried by tho-executive-To amend Rule 20 to provido for,.tho payment' of,;a benefit' allowance to competitors covered', under, competition risk j to amoud Rule 24_ (contributions to benefit fund) by adding "in case of extra.i members; being enrolled, if the time remaining exceeds six;-months, full rate to be paid,; if under that term,; half rate "; to amend Itulo 25, (management .expenses), so as ,to. provide .for: the payment of a sum .not exceeding £40? instead.of £20, .into the benefit fund at the end-of the year,{after.''liabilities: ard provided forto amend Ruloi 29 (dissolution of' Society) to provido for tho payment of. half of the surplus. ;(if any) ,being .paid..to ,'the' United Fire ; Brigade Association,and tho. balance, to charities nominated by brigades then in tho Society in their respective districts: ; ,
The Lower Hutt delegate moved the following- motion That any!, firo brigade associated with tho, Unitod Fire Brigades arnd Accidcnt Society whori.'holding fire brigado competitions-bo allowed to take out an open policy in -tho accidcnt: society to_ cover any; live competitors who may bo.taking jwrfc in such competitions on the paymont. of . the sum of 12s. 6d." The motion was lost. ,
It. was decided ,to grant members of tho executive £2 2s. as- expenses when attending tho Conforenco.J ■ Tho elbction o£ officers for tho ensuing' year resulted as follows President, Captain King; vice-presidents, Captain Jenkins, Cap-tain-Spriggms; secretary,, Mr. J. G. Gilbord; treasurer, Superintendent Smith-; auditors, Messrs. J. W. Gardnor and W. Hodgson. This concluded tho business. , MR. HISLOP AND HIS CRITIC. ; ! Alluding to tho, remarks mado by tho President or tho Firo Brigades' Conference, who oondomnod tho action of tho Wellington City Council in abolishing tho local Fire Board, tho Hon. T. W. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, said yesterday to a Dominion reporter : —" I don't think Mr. Hansen has said anything not already said quite as well in our own/Council and outsido it. Cortainly nothing'has .been ..said that can have.any effect on tho judgment of tho Councillors, who had thought out the matter very carefully before wo took action."
