DUTIES ON FOOD.
— HIGH PRICE OF BREAD. DEBATE IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. PRODUCTIVE POWER OF THE EMPIRE. BY TELEQItArn —PRESS ASSOCIATION —COrVEIOHT. London, March 5. In the House of, Commons, Sir J. F. Loose (Liberal member for Accrington, Lancashire) moved:— ' "That as the high price of bread Is duo to natural causes, the levying of an import duty on wheat would aggravate tha suffering caused by dear bread." Sir. E. A. Goulding moved an amendment declaring:— " That-the high price is due to natural : causes and the neglect of British resources." Mr. Goulding expressed the opinion that a re-arrangement of duties on food products, with a view to encouraging agriculture at homo, and giving preference to the colonies, would liavo'tho effect of stimulating tho productive power of the Empire. .He censured tho Government for refusing to stimulate the production of wheat within tho Empire by:granting! the colonies-preference. Mr. Lloyd-Georgo (President of'the Board of Trade) said that Germany was supplying sufficient warning against tho 'adoption of tho amendment. There lis. duty Was 7 paid on aIL imported wheat, and tlie same duty wa3 paid upon German home-grown wheat. Mr. Golding's amendment was rejected by 293 to 90. - - '' ; - The, debate-was adjourned.
