The position of things is explained by tho fact that almost - . all the fat stcck from the country districts lias gone; and with very little feed, animals will not como forward quickly enough to ■ meet the demand. The present exodus of cattle alone from country districts may bo gauged by the fact that lately a, Wellington meat firm has been drawing 1200' head av week from the East Coast of tho Wairarapa.
