The deadlock regarding the election of a Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has been overcome. Eventually, on 1 tho,Premier's,mor tion, Mr. Leahy was oleoted, the Government and Opposition voting against Labour. THE GOVERNOR'S SPEECH. * I PROPOSED LEGISLATION. • (Reo. March 4, 10.54 p.m.) • Brisbane, March 4. , Tho Govornor opened Parliament to-day with tlio usual . ceremonies.'. ' : ' ' The Governor's Speech intimated that tho balance of tho programme interrupted .by the 'political crisis .would be re-introduced. The proposed legislation includes a Bill providing, in tho case' of disagreement between, tho two Houses, for direct appeal to the people; and an amendment of the Electoral Act as regards postal votes. A special ,ap--1 propriation will be introduced to cover .an expenditure of £687,000: sinco the dissolution following upon Parliament refusing Supply. Mr., Leahy was born in Ireland in 1854, and arrived in Australia in 1874. He became a member of the Queensland Assembly in 18D3.' He was for some time a member of Mr. Phiip's Cabinet, but more recently he lias been a supporter of Mr. ICidston.
