THE DUNEDIN FIRE.

Clll TELECItArn—riIEE3 association.? r . Dunedin, March 4. The actual scene of the outbreak of fire in the city last night was the rear portion of a three-storied stone building on the south side of the Mutual ,Store 3 Building, occupied by Blaikie, photographer. Tho fire appears to havo been smouldering some time, as before the alarm was given smoke was observed in the locality. Tho smoke eventually'made itself so evident that tho fire brigade was called out. It proved extremely difficult at first to get at the seat of tho fire, and it was only after tho lioso had been'extended up over tho front of the building and tho intervening space .between tho two walls bridged by a ladder-that water was .poured into tho burning building. :. It was not'long before tho firo, was got under, but a good deal of water was poured ipto the building. Blaikie's promises and contents suffered a good deal of damage; considerable volumes of water found their', way into the second floor and tho result was that stock owned by J. M'Donald,. whoso tailoring premises are in tho building, suffered a good : deal of damago, as also did tbo contents of Lothaby's umbrella shop. s • ' Tho building is-owned by Grccnslade, and M'Donald has a lease of the second flat. Tho only insurance ascertainable is one of £800 which M'Donald had on his stock in tho lloyal Office. The building where last night's .firo occurred was owned by Speight and Co., and insured for £1500 in tho South. British office. On stock of Blaikie, photographer, there was £300 in tho Norwich Union, but ±ho loss -is much heavier. ' M'Donald, tailor, ♦had £800 in tho Royal, and Lethaby £750 in tho. Queensland office. Tho damage in the latter case is easily covered.
