TECHNICAL SCHOOL SITE.
' MOUNT' COOK DESIRED. . ' A letter- lias been addressed -to tho Minister for Education ; by 'Mr; La- TroboJ director' of-'the.Wellington-Technical' tho ques-tionof-the Mount 'Cook' sito.' - . Tlie writer,'directed by the Technical Education Board, aisks for support'-in the endeavour, to have a portion ,of the Mount Cook site set aside for a technical;.college..- -It. is. pointed out that' the .restricted- areas in tho city prevent a suitable sito: being obtained,. sinco the purchase of a sufficient area and the sncrifico of buildings on it would bo beyond the-finances of; the. Board ia:iid there were no/vacant sections, of sufficient -bizo to. be obtained -in a central .position. -, .. ".,Tb'e City Council could be approached in thisi matter,'"-,continues.the writer, " and my. chairman would: not • liesitato -to urgo this Board-to solicit tho Council's help in this deserving cause, but that the Council, has no availablo area suitable for the purposes of a technical college. It is absolutely necessary that-tho school should bo,'located near tho Basin Reserve, on; a : part either of the Mount Viow or tho Mount-Cook reserve, in order that it may be. more easily, quickly, and cheaply approached from all parts of tho city. This is most important for ;tno day, students, many of whom aro young, ami also for the evening students, with whom timo is an object, seoing that they have to go homo from their work, at 5. p.ra. : or ,6 p.m., get tea, change, and reach tlio school at 6.30 or 7 p.m. !• Tho Mount Cook site is tho preferable'one, and will bo doubly so if,tho Government should,; as has been contemplated, romovo tlio mental hospital from Mount Viow aiid dovoto tho site to purposes of hospital oxtension. . The advantages of placing the Technical Collego adjacent to tho museum aro very considerable, and will bo greater still as, tho scopo of work.,in the school widens
witli tho growth of the town. Tho advantages to the public of having their educational institutions adjacent to one another would also bo great."
