, A'pleasant gathering took place on Friday night at tho'Bpllevuo Gardens, the occasion being tho--presentation, of a purse of sovereigns ; ; to Mr. E.. Anstiss, ~who has been - in charge' of tho gardens thero for . the last 23 years. The meeting was a representativoi district, gathering,, and showed tho esteem in which-tho recipient was held. Tho cliair was taken by the Mayor (Mr. T. A. Peterkin). /Numerous toasts wero proposed, that of " Tho ■ Guest" being received with great acclamation. , In;; responding .to the toast,, Mr.. Anstiss replied -in feeling terms to tho many friends whom he has come in contact with during his :]ong service at tho gardens, but trusted that the severance .of this conaieotion would in no way interfere with- future relations, in . his 'hew venture; Mr. . Anstiss has, with Mr. - Simpson, just taken over tho old-established livery arid carrying business of Messrs. G. and W. T. Cudby, of .tho, Lower Hutt., Tho Dominion Bazaar, now proceeding in the Town Hall, had another successful day's business on Saturday, .when the hall wag crowded- to such an extent that provision had to bo . made for tho extension of tho bazaar until to-night, when the remainder of tho numerous Art Unions will be drawn. The firo bells rang out at 7.30 p.m. on Sunday and after/inquiry it was found that tho alarm was duo to a. candle having set firo to a window curtain. The Brigade turned out smartly,., but. fortunately - their services were not required. At l'etono Police Court, before Messrs. M'Ewan and Short, J.P.'s, on Saturday last, William Devoridge,,, butcher, arrested on Friday evening by Constable Cox, was called upon to:answer to charges,'first, of riotous and disorderly behaviour while drunk, and, second, of using obscene language in a public placo. Accused; pleaded guilty, and was fined £5 on the first ,charge, in default one month's imprisonment with hard labour, and on tho second the' penalty imposed was £10, or-two months' imprisonment, the sentences to bo cumulative. , »
