' The Marquess of Linlithgow died suddenly at Pau,! where'ho was-spending the winter. The Marquess of Linlithgow was bom in 18(50, being tho eldest son of the sixth Earl of Hopetoun. Ho was .educated at Eton, and visited Turkey, and Egypt in 1881, and America in. 1882. He was appointed Whip] in the House of Lords ! in, .1833, Lord-in: Waiting in 1885-86 and 1886-89, Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly' of the Clnircli of. Scotland, 1887-89; Governor of Victoria,! 1889-95; Paymaster-General, 1895-98; Lord' Chamberlain of lI.M. Household,. 1898-1900; Governor-General of . the Commonwealth of Australia, 1900-1902 (resigned); Secretary for Scotland, 1905. He was made Marquess of, Linlithgow in 1902. 'He had the honour of. being' the first GovernorGeneral of Australia, and held that office when the Commonwealth, was proclaimed :by the Prince .of, \Vales. \ ' '
