WELLINGTON ROWING ASSOCIATION.

. ANNUAL REGATTA. . . A choppy sea, and sudden, heavy gtists : of wind' were conditions unfavourable to 'the out-ahd-out success of the Wellington Rowing Association's annual regatta 1 on Satur-' day. The wind being northerly, the Petono course was selected. About 200 peoplei witnessed ,tho finishes ashore, ,nnd.the ; Pilot, the ' umpire's boat, also held a fair'complement,. Tho wind dropped considerably as tho afternoon proceeded, but still remained gusty. l: All the events were run well /ip to time, and this commendable promptitude in tho casti of tho maiden doitblo sculls prevented 'three teams, whicli had come straggling down late to'the' post, from competing.;; Tho prizes were evenly distributed. Blenheim appropriated the senior fours with a finely-trained i team. Blenheim also carried off .tho maiden 1 double sculls and the junior pairs,: and came second iu tho senior pairs. Canterbury Rowing Club rowed second in the vsenior- fours,'first in tho youths' fours, and' first in thesenior pairs—a good performance."The Union< Club (Christchurch) had a useful four in Mahoney (stroke), Blackmorc, 1 O'Brien, and Mansfield,. \ who .appropriated ■ the - junior, clinker event. and the : junior fours. Picton : representatives, thpugh rowing' well, could got no closer than second in three,'junior events, Wanganui entered for tho senior double sculls and senior sculls,'and won b&h.' Stars had only one .'win —the maiden-fours— : though securing a second anjl a third. Wellington had worse luck, failing' to score one first, though securing sccond in tho senior double sculls. M'Donald and Marshall, -Wanrepresentatives in the senior, sculls, showed superior form. The heavy sea in which the race was rowed ovidently : -tdok. it. out of all the crews, though the, winners preserved good style to the.end. -M'Donald, who will represent Wanganui at the chani-i pionships, and is looked* .upon as ' a: ? likelyi competitor, was considerably; more - than';• a' match'- for--his Saturday, opponents. ' There were varying- opinions about . his -style; but his power and dash were undoubted. • He also applied his power well. Fell - (Stars) i his - nearest opponent, pulled a nice.long stroke, but lacked tho power and dash. Canterbury, . tho winners, had all the best ,of the water in. ;the senior pairs,, due to excellent steering. 'Tho; ..closest .'finish, of .the. day was' in'' the junior clinkers. 'In this race, Picton, though beaten, showed very nice style, ■-getting; a. good.solid -catch fronv the start-. The;duties. .of'the officials were carried out, satisfactorily. Mr.'. J. E. Widdop' got tho competitors, away' well togeth'eij Mr. "N. Galbraitli was umpire.' Messrs; R. W. M'Villy, A. S. Biss, ,and WiBridson, judges, and -Jlessrs. A. Laurenson and; W.
