SALARIES FOR WOMEN DOCTORS
A resolution passed by tho British Association of Registered Medical Women, that "wliero moil and women practitioners aro doing idontical'work tho rato of payment should be the same," seems to have boon called forth (says tho "Guardian") by the proposal that in appointing medical inspectors of schools lower salaries should bo offered to wonion on tho ground of their sex. , ' Local, education authorities, with -whom the duty of making such appointments rests, cannot bo ignorant that tho training and education of duly qualified medical women liavo been exactly tho samo as thoso of medical moil, and they, must not bo allowed to supposo that justification for a different scalo of remuneration is to bo found in tlio fact that tho work (for which either moil or women may bo appointed at discretion) is of a kind especially suitable to women. , Tho principle for which the medical women aro c'ontondin" is ono on which they liayo insisted from tho first, and it- is satisfactory to soo that tliejr view of ■ tho matter is strongly upheld by somo of the most distinguished members -of tlio profession." -Wo aro convinced that the opinion expressed in the letter to "The Times," signed, among othors,. by Sir Lauder Bruiitoii, Sir Thomas Barlow, and Mr. Danvers Power, that'"it would be contrary to-tho public interest that 'women doing work for which tlioy aro-admitted to bo 'specially suitablo' should not bo paid at tho same rato as men doing identical- work;" will bo endorsed by all who appreciate the full bearings of the question.
