As tho Wellington-Brougham Hill 'match to have been''played last Saturday was postponed by mutual consent until some future dato in March, tho only shield match played was Newtown v. Victoria" College; ; - As 'expected, this was a very close contest; Newtown proving itself, just strong • eno%h; to win by 7 sets-to 6. Morris again fell to Prouse, but it' was very, even' going, the latter , player being just'a shado better on tho day. This is tho third time the V'.C. man 'has beaten the Newtown player by the narrowest of margins. Wilson, still fresh from victory over Young on tho previous Saturdajv ployed a very fine gamo against Beore, and-had him going from, tho start. With a lead 7—2 Wilson only let his opponent take two more, games, arid won the match, 9—4; Anderson made a good fightagainst ltedward, but the Newtown player's well-known steadiness wore the College'man down,'and tho set went to Newtown, 9—5. Na'glo and Putnam had an even game, the former' only winning, 9—B. Nagle was not playing at his best, whilst his opponent Putnam gave signs of great improvement since the commencement of tho season. Miss Van Staveren again proved herself too strong for Miss Glasgow, who was only able to securo-, two games against her more bril-
liant opponent. Mrs. Nagle appeared with renewed vigour, and niaao Miss Roberts, who was not playing up to tho mark work hard for any point sho gained. The three games won by tho V.C. lady were all long vantage ones. Morris and Wilson wcro not so consistent ns Prouse and Beere, who won o—6. The College pair when working well . together are a'hard doublo to beat-. It took Redward and Nagle. all their time to avert defeat, at the hands of .Do LkiMaro and Anderson, and . it, ; was . mainly owing to Naglo's'good service that!the lastgamo went to Nowtown. Tho Putnam and Smith combination was hotter than that of Low and Brailsford, and thbgamo sifter being evenly contested, went in favour of tho Coflce. Misses Glasgow and Robinson aro proving themselves to bo a sterling pair, and their win,- 7—l, from Misses Van Staveren and Roberts adds another creditablo win to their list. Miss Roberts had rather, moro than her share of the work to d 6, being so well peppered by : the opposing' pair . that her partner at timos seemed forced to become a spectator. In the' sccond ladies' double,' M««lamca Nado aud Grady defeoiM.
Scotland M'lntosli cliiofly;: by their, more experienced' play. Both the combined doubles went to Victoria College, 7—5. Cup.—lChandallali defeated Newtown by 8 sets to 5. Holdsworth again disappointed his supporters, for with a lead of B—s against • Thwaites, tho game looked'won, then for somo unforseen reason .tho Khandallah player faded away and Thwaites conmig .with a run took the next four games and set, 9—B. Fleming gavo Sheppard a good go, but was not quito- so .suro as "tho Newtown player. Miss Clark pinyod orio of her; best games against Miss "Cook, and taking tho lead early in tho set stood at '6—4,' when tho Khandallah lady with a most determined otfort took tho next threo games and set, -7—6. Misses Cock and'Batham suffered. defeat for tho first tirrid this season from'; Miss Clark and Mrs/lii)\v. Tho latter lady plays a very' safe.game and was well backed up by her partner. After tho score fivo all was, called, .the Newtown pair tcok tho next two games somewhat easily, and.-match, 7—5. Misses K. Clark and N. Batham proved a good doublo. having an easy wjn from Misses Redward and Bock. Wellington defeated Petono by 10 sets to 3. Cornell by beating Fruser, 9—B, was tho only Potone man to win a singlo, tho others falling to Wellington -easily, as also did both ladies singles. . Miss Penny and Mrs: Hawkins proyed ; much too, good in' the. doubles for Mrs. Pierard and Miss' Diamant,' who' were;only-ablo to tako, three games! Tho: second ladies' doublo also went comfortably; to Petone, jMiss Bennett and Mrs. .Wilkinson 1 having a runaway win from Mrs. Reeves and 1 Miss Hannah. "

Murray, in beating Edwards ami-Miss Kellaway, 7—2, scored' a win for tho College: _ Brougham Hill A defeated Johnsonvillc, Robertson and Moore and Miss-Wilson arid Mrs Mooro, contributing their share of wins to tho surburbaraSteam. , Racquet.—-KiloVrnio is still leading, and by defeating ;Victoria College:.A adds another wm .to; its list. Brougham Hill A defeated Victoria College B. O'Lear.v and Misses and Saxon had the unique experience of winning this • match themselves. Through two Brougham .Hill players not putting in an. appearance 'three'' matches' had to go by default to the t .College. . Muritai scored a win against Brougham Hill, Buddie and Howdeu doing well for the winning team, fhq Misses Harrowby did not attehd, and their threo games went by "default. .. ' Mr. Ross, tho selector .for tho Canterbury team, has chosen the. following men to play against tho Wellington team -in Christchurch to-day-.—Messrs. T. R. Quill, R D Harman, G. Oljivier, Ai D. Cox, W. Goss, and W. H. Kiver. Tho ladies have not yet been definitely announced. •••/«'•••• ; In tho semi-final of the United Clubs Men's championship singles T; ■ R. -' Quill met- W, Goss in tho ono half and won in straight ■sets, ' though "the -match was ; riot' by 'an'y means ; as. one-sided ao tho score' seems to' indicate. •' • R. D. Harman heat. G:' Ollivier by three 'sets to two. Harman's' tennis. has improved and rejuvenated "until now ono could be almost accused of a waiit of respect iy pointing out how long ago it is since he forced Ins way into first class tennis.
