WATER IN MARS.
A SPECTROSCOPIG--EXAMINATION. BY TELEGHAPII—FKESS New York, February 27. Professor Lowell, of the' Flagstaff Observatory, Arjzo'na, claims that. a :special 'spectroscope reveals the presence of 'water in the atmosphere of Mars. THE SUPPOSED, CANALS. 1 "To.tho naked, eye (writes .Lord Avobury) liars appeal's like a ruddy 'star.'ot'tlie ; first, magnitude.- It has two satellites, .which'have been happily .named ..and . Deim'os- 1 Fear and Dismay. It 'is,- little '-more- -than half as largo as'the earth, and,-though generally fnr moro distant, it sometimes approaches us within 35,000,000 miles. This has enabled us to study its>, physical structure. It'seems /very probable that there is water in Mars, and the two poles aro tipped with . white, as/if capped by ico and snow. [It presents'also 'a series of remarkable y parallel-lines, the true nature of which is not yef-understood," V The lines are supposed by some, including Professor Lovell, to be, artificially constructed canals. . •
