At the Palmerston Magistrate's Court yesterday, Patrick Walsh, en a charge of breaking ami entering n dwelling at Toltomaru 011 February 20, was committed for trial at tlio Supremo Court. Evidence was given to tlio effect that accused opened the door of the house-hooper's room, caught her- by tlio throat, and threw hor 'down by tho sido of her bed, telling her not to cry out. She eventually made her escape. Georgo Hope, railway guard, stated that ho put accused off tlio train at Tokomarn oil tlio night in question.

111 tlio District Court, Masterton, yesterday, before His Honour District Judge Haselden, a ease of alleged slander was heard in which Georgo Manning, a Kopuaranga farmer, sued his neighbour, James. Scorrar, for £100 damages.. After the plaintiff's case had closed, couiisol for defcnce (Mr. B. J. Dolan) admitted that the slanderous , words had been used,- and, by, consent of the jury and plaintiff, a verdict was accepted for £25 damages. Defendant also filed a full apology. Mr. C. A. Potvnall acted for plaintiff. Tho Borough Engineer (Mr. T. W. Mansfield) is arranging for the completion of the work of widening and improving Villa and Bontley Streets, as contemplated by the Council, under the £25,000 street loan. 1 The widening of Makora- Road will probably be proceeded with shortly. At a meeting of the' Borough Works Committed it was decided to acquire the liccessnry land. It has been decided by tho Abattoirs Cominittco of tho. Borough Council that the killing fees at the abattoir cannot be reduced, at-ipresent, &s requested by the . master butchers. ~
A juror named Richard Field was .fined £5 for non-attendance at the District Court yesterday morning. With, reference to /tlio Government bacteriological examination ,of two. samples of the water at tho foot of Mount Holdsworth, which was believed to have been' the cause of typhoid fover' contracted by two Masterton residents who were ' working 'in tho vicinity, Dr. Makgill has reported tho results of Dr. M'Laurin's analysis. Bacteriological ly, both samples -wore unsatisfactory, though it is questionable, whether they were tho source of. infection in tho typhoid cases. Mountain parties should take tho precaution ol boiling tho water before drinking it.
