PONY-RACING AND DETTING.
Sir,—Referring. ,to' the rumours' and..a statement that appeared in print a few days back to tho eft'cct that any. bookmakers betting at the pony races at Miramar (in Saturday next would bo disqualified from betting on any of tho other,-raco courses, I have read the Act very carefully,, and it' seems that this contention is not correct., There in nothing in the Act which' in any'way gives such powers to a racing club as to enablo thorn: to refuaa a bookmaker a license to bet on those grounds—moreover,' such action would be entirely in contravention of tho spirit of tho Act. Might I advise bookmakers or, anyone interested to take legal, advice on this point and -they will find that I am correct and that even., if tho clubs wished, to yet thiy could not refuse a liccnso to a bookmaker on these grounds. I should bo glad, sir, to have an expression of opinion from you as.to whothor my contention' is tho correct reading of tho am, etc., _P. P. BIGAVOOD. Miramarj February 17. [Wo cannot pretend' ~io give, legal advice, but it appears clear that there is nothing in tho Gaming Act to prevent a bookmaker hotting at an unregistered raco meeting, and afterwards securing a license to bet at a registered mooting.] "
