The Customs revenue collected at Wellington yesterday amounted to £3875 4s. 7d.

The steps are to bo widened considerably, and the lower flight will be •mado' attractive by -rounding;'tho'-Steps 1 between: Barratt's and tho Dominion Office. The work should mean a general improvement in the-appearand Of one of the-most important public rights-of-way ,in " the" city.

■The "Wellington Sunday School Union has been in communication with workers in other cent res with a view to promoting a convention of the Sunday School teachers of New Zealand.The., proposal has met A ;with : the approval of the other Unions, who. realise that much may be gained by such a fathering. Tho results of the October, 1907,' examination, as announced in December last by'tho Wellington local committee, were confirmed, and tho successful candidates were admitted as Fellows and Associates of the Institute. It was decided to send good wishes to the Association of Accountants and Auditors of New Zealand, whose annual meeting is now being held in Christchurch. Tho Bill Committee reported that it had'made good progross with the new Accountants: Bill that has been drafted, and which-the Government will bring down next sossion. It having been suggested that the corrected statement with reference to Mr. Frank Cookson, published in our issue of January 31, may not liavo bees soen by some who saw tho crronoous statement published on the 30th, wo desire to again stato that tho statement made on tho' 30th that Mr. Cookson had been arrested was incorrect; and that Mr. Cookson was concerned, not as defendant, but as promoting tho prosecution in a case of assault against certain defendants. Wc exceedingly regret tho annoyanco that such a statement as ours of the 30th caused to Mr. Cookson and his' friends, and trust that this announcement may reach all who may have seen the erroneous statement. .

Tho Wellington Sunday School Union has endorsed applications for diplomas of honour for a lady and gentleman who have laboured continuously for twenty-nine aiid forty-five years respectively. The towns aro Pah.iatua, Hunterville, Timaru, Geraldine, Oamaru, and Lawrence. A poll taken in Gisborne resulted in favour of continuing the present system of separate > weekly halfholidays for shops and factories.. Of those places which have decided upon the change, Pahiatu'a, Hunterville; and Timaru enter upon the new system this week, and Geraldine, Oamaru, and Lawrence will do so nest week.

There was a fair attendance at tho New Century Hall, Kent Terrace,' last evening, when Mrs. Georgia Gladys Cooley again conducted a meeting under the auspices of tho Spiritualists' Association, Mr, W. M'Lean presiding. . In the course cf her addre:s Mrs! Cooley spoke of the return of the spirits of the departed with messages of love and cheer to their friends on the earth plane. . Tko Rev. J*. T. Pinfold, of Rangiora, President of tho New Zealand Christian Endeavour Union, will arrivo in Wellington to-morrow morning, and will be the guest of the Rev. Macdonald Aspland during a brief- visit to this city. The Napier Carnival Committee (telegraphs our Napier correspondent) havo approached the Railway Department on moro than one occasion to grant concessions during -the approaching festival, but have not met with great: success. Tho, Mayor, Mr. J. Vigor Brown, recently telegraphed to the Minister for Railways urging an extension of excursion privileges, and this (Wednesday) morning received a reply from Mr. Hall-Jones .to tho effect that it was intended to grant.excursion tickets in connection with the'carnival as far south as Waipukurau, but, in view of further reports that had "been made, it had been - decided to extend the privilege as far south as Woodvillo. In' reply to this tho Mayor sent the following tolegiam: —" Thanks for concession. Wo still feel that we have a grioyanco in not having excursion fares from Wellington.
