SCENES IN COURT.
$ _~ POLIGE INSPECTOR AND COUNSEL. (DY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL COIWESrONDKNT.) Napier, February 18. Proceedings at tlio Magistrate's Court during tho past two days havo been characterised by somewhat unpleasant scenes, duo to sharp expressions of feeling between PoliceInspector M'Donnell and local counsel. Yesterday afternoon Mr. AVestall was crossexamining a witness, when Inspector M'Donnell iriado an interjection. Mr. AVestall retorted sharply, " You aro not in tho box giving evidenco. It is impossible for yoil- to suppress yourself. You ought to know how to conduct yourself at your ago." Inspector M'Donnell replied: "That is most improper. This afternoon a similar sccno was enacted, when a motor-car case was being heard beforo Mr. M'Carthy, S.M. Mr. Lusk objected to the manner in which Inspector McDonnell was cross-examining tho defendant in theso torms: " Your Worship, the way tho Inspector cross-examines witnesses is becoming a perfect scandal in this Court. You have not yet had an experience of him, but this is his usual behaviour." The Inspector: "Mr. Lusk, I always carry out my duties in a straightforward manner." Mr Lusk retorted warmly. This remark led to a discreditable scene, and, tho Magistrate then intervened and said that he would not allow any further discussion. _ The Inspector apologised and tried to offer explanations, but Mr. M'Carthy ordered tho case to proceed.
