'.'The Messiah" would be an extra concert, which would leave two ;more concerts to. be' provided for. Tho balance-sheet was not"' quite so satisfactory;,in former years,-but -the financial, position was'sound;" " • 5 The' balance-Bhept showed : the total receipts as £515 3s 4d '(including £21 5s 7d balimco iii hand, - honorary • 'memberi' 1 subscriptions ■ £252 10s. 6d.,: choral'. numbers' '■ subscriptions £55 os., concert receipts'£lßo ' ;6s. 9d.j. : The expenditure, stood at- £459 9s;<' 9d;; made up chiefly of the following items': Rent ! of'practice rooms. £38: rent of-Town Hall, £62'75. In moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet; the .Chairman, the. financial position of the , society. He pointed out that though : they had a balance of-£55 13s. 74., tho balance-sheet; showed'sundry, creditors £9-5 los. Gel." This appeared , unsatisfactory, perhaps, but there was another item of £42, representing honorary members' outstanding subscriptions. This more,-than covered the debit. At .tho - sattie time, it was a, pity that , such a large amount' should bo outstanding at; the end of the year.'Howover, putting these sums against one anothor tho Society- was- pretty, well solvent. Ho further referred to the. large item of £88 12s. for professional assistance in l the orchestra. In this connection, he said,- one; wondered whether, they, would ever be able to. get.back to the old condition of, things when a strongly amateur orchestra was at the. disposal, of a musical organisation such as this. No doubt thoro was much to bo said, on . behalf of tho ■ players, but tho sooner- they could, got .the spirit of true amateurism in their, orchestras the better it. would be.. At- present tho expenso seemed , almost! unavoidable, but they had something to hope'for in the future.vX'iz.', a strong body of amateur players, who give their services for tho love of musicvarid, for its advancement. He hoped ho would not bo misunderstood-in these remarks. It was satisfactory- to 'seo; that' they had had largo door receipts, but it would be better to have more honorary members. Ho emphasised, the fact that the Union had a claim on the public of Wellington for support. Speaking of the performance'of '' Israel inEgypt," he said .it left. something for the, society to - livo up to. In .'referring to ■ the assistance of officers, ho dwelt; especially, upon tho, value uf tho services of Mr. R. Parker as conduo tor, and to the, assistance of Mr. Waters in tho .preparation work: (Applause.) •; Mr. Dasent seconded the motion- for. the adoption- of tho report.' .
