Maids-of-lionour are chosen by the Queen herself from among the daughters of peers who are personal friends qf her Majesty. The first thing brought to tho niaid-of-honour on her appointment is her -badge, which is-a miniature picturo of 'tlie Queen, set .in brilliants, and suspended from a ribbon; Just before tho dinnor-hour, the maid-of-honour in | waiting, has to stand in the corridor outside the Queen's private apartments, Sho'carries a bouquet, which, on entering tho diningroom, she; lays at tho right of the Queen's plate.'.' Tho maid-of-honour sits at dinner next to tho gentleman on the-Queen's'right;.. This" rule is, howbver, rolakcd when Itoyal f guests are present. ' * After dinner, unless otherwise commanded, tho niaid-of-honour retires to her. room, whence, however, she is frequontlv recalled to read, sing, play tho piano, or take n hand at'cards. . .. , j... ■'.
