PETONE NEWS.
At about l.'iO a.m. yesterday the firebells rang out an alarm of fire, and, knowing how dry everything is, a large .number of residents got up. Those who did saw a groat sight, for a house, owned by Mr. Whitehotisc, at-Alice-towh, was not only destroyed, but every particle of wood, even ,to . the piles in tho groun, was burned to ashes.
Two subscribers to tho Seddon Model Memorial Fund wrote the Petone Technical School Board protesting against- the Railway Workshops representative (Mr. I). M'Kenzie) taking his seat, on the. ground that it was illegal. .The Board' considered it so; and a fresh election took place, when Mr. M'Kenzie was elected unopposed. , . Tho fortnightly meeting of the Korokoro Baud of Hope was held iin the schoolroom on Wednesday night. There, was a good attendance, and an excellent 1 programmo was contributed by Misses Joirett," Williams, Pomfrey, and Messrs. Delahunty, Pomfrey, and Jowott. Several choruses were sung in good stylo by those present. Mr. Houso gave an address.
The weekly session of the Hope of Petone, 1.0. G.T., was held in the Eanfurly Han, Petone, on Wednesday, Bro. T. Towrisend presiding; Bro; J. 1 W. M'Ewan conferred tho district degrees on two' sisters and five brothers, and Sister Dcnby was installed as Vice-Templar. A quoit competition, Sisters versus Brothers, was won by the Sisters. The following items. were ; i rendered Pianoforte solo, Sister M'Ewan; recitations, Bro. Barnett and Bro. Newbury (Star of Newtown Lodge); songs, Bros. Trailo, Hohncs (Star of Nowtown Lodge), M'Ewan, .and Bro. D. Robertson. It is intended to . hold . tho Juvenile Templars' picnic in threo weeks' time, and the prize distribution is to take place, next month.
