Tho Markets Committee reported to tho City Council last night that it favoured tho resumption for the purposes of a market of the land' on* tho foreshore occupied by tho Wellington Naval Volunteers, .Wellington Rowing Club, and the Star Boating Club. ; The recommendation was submitted at the previous meeting when it was referred.back W furtlief Consideration. . Tho Mayor, in moving that consideration of the matter be postponed Until ing said that a request had been inado that those interested should be heard before the Council came to a decision. Ho might mention that a very largo number of people were interested in the matter. Their hopes had been raised when, the leases were re-newed,'-and -he thought it was only right that they should bo beard before their, rights were interfered with. • . Councillor' Smith, chairman of tho committee iu question, offered no objection- to this course being adopted. He was, ho said, strongly in favour of access to the sea front being, secured to tho citizens -for, all. time. The desirableness of having, a site set, apart for a market had been allirtilod in 1891.
