PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
■ The. ordinary meeting of'the Petono'Borough Council-was held .last evening, when there, were ' present-the Maj-oi-'(llr.. ; Ji '.VV. M'Ewan), Coun-1 cillors,' Nicholson;, Cole, Sliortt,' -Southgate, Smith, Castle, Colquhoun, and Dr.'Harding. ' A' deputation- from the Wellington ' Rugbv Union, consisting of : Messrs. ;S. S. 'Brown anil J Murray; : waited on the Council in connection with tlio proposed: alterations in' the'lease .of; the , v ßecreation Grounds.: After a long dis'cussion it ,^-as.resolved,,on. the motion of-Coun-cillor'.Cole,; that things go'on ;as last-year, ■i Councillor Shortt moved an amendment, whioh,lapsed for jvant of a seconder, that, tho ground be leased to/ the Union, for five years at Jl5O for the first year, iCICO for the second, £170' for. the third, .£IBO for the fourth, and ' JC2OO for. the fifth, with the right' of renewal. \.letter' was received from Mr.'.J: ©• Castle, secretary .of,;the ;;Technical School,,"notifying 'the. Council that r it-,was,- entitled. -to .appoint two representatives; on tho■ Board,'of Managers for the present year.; Councillor' Col-moved, .and .Councillor ShorttVseconded,' that Councillors Nicholson and Castle be the-representa-tives froin the Council,; and this "was agreed to. iThe ..caretakerof tno/Domain- .(Mr.'-.F. IL 'Criuhpton) wrote.; resigning ' his, position 1 , and asking to bo' allowed to retain the lamp-light-ing. ; The resignation . was- accepted, and the matter;of-lamp-lighting left over for the time being.' -It. was 'also; decided that' applications' be invited for the position at £25 a year. -A- letter - was received from itlio AVellington Town':Clerk,:with regard to the proposed pipe and Iraflic bridge. It was stated that the work was somewhat urgent, and it,was asked -that'all--interested should appoint delegates, with' full' powor to net. and "finally. dbal. ( vith the m'atter.," 1 It w;as- added that the • Wollington' Council, only' considored that' a very small portion* of the, maintenanco should .be hornp by them. - 1 . Shortt, Nicnolson, and Southgate - were oleoted delegates Ho' H-prc-•se'nt the I'ctone Council, and were given full powor to act, at the conference. -, The -Wellington Woollen .Company wrote' 1 .asking for a • cheque, for, .£43, being' the pricearranged upon, for the, right-of-way to tlio settling tanlc."; Oh' Councillor South's motion, .'seconded; by Councillor Shortt, it was, rosnlved ■that, as, sooii as tho transfer is 'made,out, the. cheque-'will bo paid. , ' .A ' proposal from tho Petono Fire Brigade for the shifting of tlio ' firebell' in NelsonStreet to the corner of Udy.'Street iml the Ilutt : Eoad was, left to the Piro Board to lirrango. ~••,. ■ ' s A telegram was, received:notifying the Council; that yestprdny was the date fixed for tho election of the firo board for ..the borough; The Mayor anil Councillors Castle und.South-' •gate .wero. appointed to act. . ■
