NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By Gi.encob.) .-

■It-was a .perfect'day- for racing, ; hiit the attendance was' only moderate, and with the exception'of a fev? Wellington visitors "there wore very few outsiders present. A feature or tne day s sport-.was tho success of horses trained at .Ciiokoboro -Lodge, and carrying the colours ,of Sir George Ciiltord. These norsos started four times, and wero succession th reo occasions, while in the. Filly Stakes, Sister Anno finished within a length of Sunslo-v.

Consequent upon the . poor attendance, the totahsator;turnover was very'small, and in addition the. machine had to contend against the bookmakers. A. small army of these was present; and appeared to hold a groat deal of money, tliongh all lost heavily. Fire first and one swond favourites won, but the winner, Jacket, was a' rank outsider. After.getting such a "gruelling" to-day, it is very unlikely that many bookmakers will apply for licenses for Saturday.

It is rumoured: here to-day that, owing to a slight accident received while training, Fleetfoot is an unlikely starter in the Middlo Park Plate. This will rob the race of a lot of interest, as the filly was first favourito, but Sir George Clifford has a very good.:second. string .to his bow in Husbandman, who will probably start a strong favourite. .

Moscow was favourite in the Tricl Stakes. 'His "success placed backers on good terms with- themselves. R. Hatch rode a very confident raco' on tho Stopniak gelding;- and yron by a head. "R. King, on Tremulous, tried to. steal a win, but Hatch, on the favourite, was awake,.and, putting his mount hard at it, gained the verdict. Tremulous has furnished n zreat deal in'the last few nionths, but she still wants, time. Los Angelos carried Mr. Stead's colours, and on this account ,Tras well' backed.
