The competition: entries , were::' Very' good, the. children's work, being especially /interesting,: and; tho presence of children", yesterday, was l as nihrkwl as was tli'eirfabsence-'.from'.- the- show in ..the Town Hall. Several of'the decorated 1 , tables showed ; an artistic.' design -.that is too .often wanting : in such exhibits, and . amo.ng the ifloral. .designs one exhibited % Miss Tippler was par-ticularly-effective. Thero were-'some special non-competitive entries, " among these being dahlias,: roses, and coreopsis, shown ,by Miss .Barber; cooking..:apples from, Mr. .Ma.nson, of Palmerstori 'North'; 1 : a fine', soloction ! o£ 'dahlias and.-Mr'.tAlpe; collection of plants from; Mrs. Salmon, pot 'plants from Mr; EL Poolo,, and a, collection of pot plants .and cut .flowers .from Messrs.: Evans . arid Sonsi : Tho gem of, the .whole exhibition w'as : the _exhibit'of • gladioli , shown .by Mr. W.'. Jackson; of Yogeltqwn; in which there were; over .52.. varieties, the most exquisite things in colour -arid' shape 'one, could imagine. The 'well-known.gladiolus,is a stiff ; and . somewhat,, intractable 'flower, with a 'ratter':" soulless- ■.■•brilliance. • .Some, of the blooms exhibited' by Mr. . Jackson are. .developed almost, out of recognition, ' and' the • colours are exquisite. ~ ' The tea-room was in Mesdames Preston and Parmcnter," and Misses Allen i,(2) : and Head; : the pot plant' stall, : Mesdames L'ee ■ and Croll;, iinil tho .'cut flower stall,.
