THE DIFFICULTIES OF SUPPLY

•.■'LOSSES AND DELAYS. 1 [BT TEI.EGRArH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . - Chrlstcfturch, February 8. The Canterbury Society for tho Preservation of Infant Lifo has met with a serious chwk to its useful, work. Tho dairy company which has co-operated -with tho Society in providing and delivering tho humanised milk find, after sonio weeks' trial, that the expenses are very much greater than they anticipated. Not only is tliero a direct loss to them tTn tho working expenses, but also no fewer than 250 bottles, costing od. each, have been either broken or' not returned. Delivering tho humanised milk and waiting for the empty bottles made tho men so la to on their rounds that it quito disorganised the company's ordinary milk business. For these reasons tho company find it quite, impossible to continue tho undertaking. . ' ' The Christchureh doctors are anxious tliat the Society should continue their work, as it meets a much needed want. In spite of tho remarkable heat and dryness, tlio infantile mortality is much smaller this summer than it was last year. The committee therefore 'intend to work bard to collect money so that- they may- lmvo a depot of their own at a future date'. The work will lie carried on for the present by their trained nurse and iiiio assistant, who .will visit' any mother •retntiriii" humanised milk, aitd will instruct her in us preparation and generally advise on tho care of tho baby.
